How to locate a Reputable Web Host

By Kristina Velazquez

Research backup host sites when you find certain aspects of the web hosting services unfavorable. That way, if the problems end up to be deal breakers, you can quickly switch to a new web host with less interruption in your plans than there would be if the web host server crashed altogether.

Decide which host to use based on how well it meets your hosting needs rather than on other services it provides. You might not get the best deal on domain names or other extra services from your web host provider. Don't purchase these extra services when you sign up for web hosting unless you're confident that you're getting the best deal.

Read the terms of service when dealing with a web host who offers "unlimited" services. Many times web hosts will offer unlimited bandwidth or sometimes hard disk space. Read the terms carefully, as they may reserve the right to ask you to upgrade your plan, if you are a higher profile customer, that has increased usage.

To maximize your profits from your website, then look closely at the web hosting companies that are vying for your business. Rates can range from $2 to $60 per month -- and it's often the cheaper models that are the most reliable. While more expensive sites give more bandwidth, you may not end up with any less downtime with the most expensive host.

If you want to use a shopping cart software, make sure it is compatible with your web host. A good web host should support certain features such as Web scripting, dynamic content or executable files. These features will allow you to add different ways for your visitors to interact with your website, for instance by leaving feedback.

Find out what other programming services your potential web host offers. You don't want your sites to be limited to CSS and HTML. The best web hosts offer the ability to code sites using PHP and ASP as well. Even if you don't think you need these languages, you should use a web host that offers them. As your knowledge of web design grows, you might want to use these languages to help your site reach its full potential.

Choose a web host that does not have constant outages. Companies that have many outages but make excuses for each outage are not reliable as they have obviously not made any plans to prevent or shorten lengthy outages. Frequent outages are a sign of a unprofessional business so do not make a commitment to such a company.

When choosing your web hosting service, do not rely on someone's recommendation, or only on the info you've read online. Most services have affiliate programs and the people recommending the service may not have any direct experience with it. You should take more than recommendations into consideration when choosing your web host.

To prepare yourself for the experience of using a free web host, get used to the idea that you will have a lot of downtime. Staying up all the time takes some specialized equipment that free hosts don't really have the budget for. As a result, your site may be down more than it is up.
